Essential Functions: JOB PURPOSE Reporting to Director, Analytics and Data Services, the Business Intelligence Specialist is responsible for partnering with development, alumni engagement, and special events colleagues to identify and define reporting needs, and analyze existing reports. Implement new applications for analyzing data, tracking progress, and improving processes. Develop new reports and processes by leveraging innovative and budget-conscious business intelligence tools suitable for Development and Alumni Affairs. Support division staff in developing data literacy and using quantitative and qualitative data to guide their work. Use data to create and share insights and support the Division of Development and Alumni Affairs in embracing a culture of measurement.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSCollaborate with colleagues to identify opportunities, using reporting and analytics to guide strategy, develop technical solutions to business problems, track work, and measure outcomes.Work closely with colleagues to build data output tools that meet the division's needs, with a goal of automating standard requests and expanding reasonable access to data for end-users. Serve as a liaison to select groups within the division to ensure that reporting needs are met and they have guidance and support for analysis when needed. Participate in development of new report requests, ad hoc reports and dashboards. Align reports and create roll-up reports to support transparency and consistency throughout the division (leadership level, director/management level, unit level).Utilize systems and reporting tools to explore data, validate reports, and supply data and required reporting. Develop acumen to independently identify which tool works best to supply information depending on the user's needs.Manage data imports and exports, and collaborate with the university's central Computing & Information Technology (C&IT) team to create and manage data transfer/synchronization processes.Develop and maintain appropriate technical solutions to meet the division's data reporting and analysis needs. Collaborate with the C&IT team to continuously improve data structures and reporting data sources.Document policies including data definitions and meta-data to ensure both report users and technology colleagues understand how report fields and parameters are defined and calculated. Provide quality control review for reports and queries developed by other team members.Manage reporting/dashboard projects from inception to completion and follow up with report users to maintain reports and make adaptations in response to changing operations and strategies.Train end-users to access reports, locate documentation, and appropriately use reports and dashboards.Lead and contribute to business process reviews and analyses. Define, analyze and document requirements. Identify opportunities for process improvement and provide leadership in the implementation of identified improvements.Adhere to confidentiality and data usage policy for the division.Special projects and related duties as assigned.
Qualifications: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEducation: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in information technology, quantitative research methods, analytics, or related field. Master's degree preferred.Experience:Minimum of three (3) years' experience working with complex datasets, including data collection, analysis, and reporting. SQL programming experience required.Experience supporting and training business users to leverage technology tools, programs, and processes. Experience with process mapping, process analysis, project management, or data mining. Experience supporting report programming in a higher education or non-profit environment preferred.Professional understanding of, and interest in, Development and Alumni Affairs best practices and general operations.Positive and collaborative professional philosophy, recognizing that this position is integral to the achievement of the goals and objectives of Development and Alumni Affairs.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIREDCOMMUNICATIONS SKILLS: Ability to communicate clearly, concisely and professionally both orally and in writing. Must possess a demonstrated attention to detail in order to achieve a high degree of accuracy.TECHNICAL SKILLS: Understand and translate complex concepts into lay terms. Proficient in the use of complex administrative systems software and BI tools, preferably in the higher education environment. Proficient with Microsoft Office suite. LEARNING AGILITY: Independent and innovative self-starter who displays an ability to learn quickly and easily adapts to changing situations. Experience researching topics to gain knowledge and understanding when information gaps exist.TEAMWORK: Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues within the division and other units to gain full understanding of the project and desired outcome; ability to produce high quality and consistent results with assistance of team members.This position requires a high level of commitment and enthusiasm.
