The Data and Platform Services group is looking for an experienced Linux systems administrator to join our team to help maintain and improve the reliability and scalability of our systems.
As part of the central IT organization (Information Services & Technology), we provide server system administration to a wide variety of internal customers at the University. The team builds and maintains systems for mission critical campus and departmental applications as well as many University websites and applications. This includes PeopleSoft applications, the student information system, business intelligence, workload automation and managed file transfer services, and many of the databases managed by our DBA Team underlying these applications (Oracle, Postgres, and MySQL).
Our focus is managing a large, varied infrastructure for the campus, so we use tools we know and trust including RHEL, Puppet, and Python, and nearly all of our systems are virtualized (our group runs a large vSphere platform).
You will work with a team of experienced professionals to design, build, and maintain Linux systems for the University's administrative and academic applications. Beyond day to day system administration, you will design and build tools and processes to increase efficiency and our ability to scale and support the campus' growing and evolving needs. This will include developing new expertise and solutions as we begin leveraging public cloud services. While you will collaborate with the team and others, you need to be able to work independently and demonstrate good judgment and initiative with minimal supervision.
Build and modify systems and their configurations to meet customer requirements
Work with customers to understand their requirements and provide design and implementation guidance
Participate in an on-call rotation, triaging and addressing production issues as they arise
Maintain systems to ensure their availability, performance, and security
Build and improve appropriate tools to make your job easier by improving operations processes and managing infrastructure
Communicate effectively with technical teams as well as stakeholders and customers with varying levels of technical knowledge
Develop and implement ideas to improve and evolve our services and operations
Participate in project teams and provide appropriate technical leadership
Bachelor's degree in a related field, or equivalent training or work experience
Six years professional experience in systems administration, primarily within a team environment
Excellent oral and written communications skills
Knowledge and skills in Linux administration, configuration management, and orchestration tools
Skill in programming or scripting to develop internal and customer-facing tools
Ability to identify and solve problems and make clear, consistent, thoughtful decisions
Excellent customer service skills
Experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHCSA/RHCE a plus)
Experience with modern configuration management (Puppet especially) and monitoring
Experience developing Puppet modules and/or designing and managing Puppet infrastructure (PCP a plus)
Experience with building tools or applications in Python
Experience with virtualized environments (vSphere a plus) and/or public cloud (AWS)
Demonstrated interest and ability in job mastery and continuous learning
