The Office of Public Health Strategy and Analysis (OPHSA) at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is searching for a qualified and motivated public health professional to join its Public Health Policy and Regulatory Research fellowship program. The program goals are to work on projects of public health importance and advance both the Fellow’s skill set and OPHSA mission.
About the FDA and OPHSA: FDA is responsible for protecting and promoting public health through regulation of a wide range of products including medical products, food and tobacco. OPHSA is located in the Office of Policy, Planning, Legislation, and Analysis, in the Office of the Commissioner. OPHSA serves as a resource to the Agency for quantitative and qualitative research and analysis on emerging issues and for advancing work on priority public health initiatives. OPHSA does this through its work on initiatives such as opioids, drug pricing, and transparency, as well as by developing and executing research to link agency activities and outputs to public health outcomes.
About the Fellowship: The Fellow may be responsible for two to four primary projects related to public health policy and research. Potential projects include research and analysis of: 1) FDA approved first generic drugs; 2) synthetic opioid epidemic; 3) data from National Poison Control Centers; and 4) FDA’s contributions to US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).
The fellow will be the primary person responsible for the project and will be expected to meet all deadlines and communicate with FDA mentors/advisors and other team members about the progress of the project as well as any other related issues.
While at the FDA, the fellow will have additional learning opportunities including: attending high-level policy and planning meetings with the office director, staff, and FDA senior leadership; exposure to other OPHSA work and the opportunity to learn from various active projects, and; the opportunity to explore the FDA beyond OPHSA.
Minimum education and experience requirements:
A public health related doctorate degree from an accredited institution (or expected within a year): Such as RN, PA, MD, PharmD, PhD or other similar disciplines.
Individuals who have completed or are currently enrolled in a clinical residency program are encouraged to apply.
Experience conducting quantitative research (primary data collection, secondary analysis, mathematical modeling, etc.) is highly desired.
Demonstrated ability to work independently.
The application packet will include the following:
Resume or CV with maximum one-page cover letter highlighting candidate’s interests in the fellowship and relevant experiences, with start date.
Two writing samples – technical, research, and/or policy oriented.
Two letters of recommendation.
Transcripts of qualifying degree(s) (unofficial transcripts acceptable).
An interview with OPHSA staff, to be held via phone or in-person (if applicant in Washington DC area).
Deadline for application is March 31, 2019 but applications will be reviewed on a rolling-basis. Early submission of applications is strongly encouraged. A selection may be made at any time during the review process.
This is a 12-month fellowship program. Fellowship starts on or after January 1st, 2019. Extensions are not guaranteed and may only be considered depending on funding availability.
The position is located on FDA’s main campus in Silver Spring, MD.
Any fellowship offer is contingent on successful completion of FDA’s required security clearance (finger prints and background check) and satisfactory assessment for conflicts of interest.
Additional Salary Information: A competitive stipend, based on FDA’s criteria for education-level stipends, and 3 days per month for personal use such as vacation or illness.
