The Business Analyst will report out of Student Life Technology Solutions (SLTS) with a focus on providing direct support to Student Life University Health Services (UHS).
The Business Analyst role ensures that data collected for reporting and evaluation activities of Student Life and UHS meets high-quality standards for accuracy, validity, reliability, use, and stewardship (e.g. data management process and compliance). This professional will assist in developing processes and systems for collecting, compiling, curating, analyzing and maintaining data and data repositories. The position requires close and effective collaboration and partnership with UHS teams, projects, and other users including senior management across Student Life.
A successful candidate will perform assessment of department and end-user business needs and document requirements, delivering to specification while ensuring that compliance regulations and governing practices for the university are met.
Data Management and Reporting 75%
Develop a comprehensive, cross-functional understanding of business processes, production systems, enterprise-wide data warehouses/sources, and departmental databases
Organize, analyze, and represent data to meet user requirements by effectively collaborating with all levels of management and participating in cross-functional activities with interrelated partners across Student Life
Store, secure, and maintain data and information repositories within standards of practice established by Student Life and governing university guidelines
Participate in and support the data management of all internally and externally sourced data
Lead the development of advanced survey instruments and execution to assure accuracy of data collection
Support the transformation of data into information by developing and designing visualizations and standard reports across multiple platforms
Develop customized reports from databases to extract data according to defined business requirements
Use effective communication skills and ensure privacy/confidentiality in the process of collaborating with, supporting, advising and educating customers and team members when handling sensitive data
Update and maintain data dictionaries with attention to detail
Promote and support the development of key performance indicators (KPI’s)
Collaboration and Special Projects 15%
Work collaboratively with other technology and administrative departments within Student Life, Michigan Medicine, and other campus partners
Use creative problem solving and strategic thinking to prevent and solve problems, seeking help from others as appropriate
Represent Student Life’s interests with all University business units and partners
Develop and maintain smooth, cooperative working relationships using formal and informal networks to accomplish tasks and objectives
Support and assist with the planning, design, development, implementation, maintenance, and evaluation of UHS business systems and operational support where/when needed
Understand and accept the need for change, cooperating in the implementation of revisions, while constructively voicing concerns and proposing alternatives. Assist in the implementation of changes within established and changing deadlines
Assist in the implementation and testing of software and upgrades as it relates to data management and governance
Provide support on special projects such as compliance and UHS financial reporting when necessary
Team Integration 10%
Work as part of the greater office suite team, participating in office coverage and providing backup support to others as needed

Functional direction is received from the UHS Supervisor, with direct administrative reporting to the Senior Project Manager in Student Life Technology Solutions
Bachelor’s degree in a technology, mathematical, or science field and/or equivalent combination of education and experience
Minimum of 5 years of experience in IT data management role
Mastery of Structured Query Language (SQL)
Experience with business software and computer applications, including Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google Apps
Proficiency with Qualtrics and additional software applications and query tools such as data warehouse repositories, Business Objects, etc.
Experience with Sharepoint and workflow development
Knowledge and basic understanding of Tableau and SalesForce
Experience or basic understanding of a clinical setting
Practical understanding of HIPAA, FERPA, data security and privacy practices
Familiarity with MiChart, including Reporting Workbench, Clarity, &/or Michigan Medicine Data warehouse (HSDW) repositories.
Basic understanding of U-M policies, procedures, and organizational structure
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with internal and external customers while providing quality customer service
Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
