The Business Intelligence Analyst provides leadership, oversight, and ensures the ultimate success of Western Carolina University's business intelligence environment. This person reaches out across campus leadership to understand their needs, and develops business intelligence solutions to help each functional area achieve operational and strategic goals.
They also work cross-functionally across both IT and functional areas to confirm a) the technical platform, tools, and foundational data are available; and b) data governance activities are in place to ensure dashboards created use fully vetted and governed campus data.
The Business Intelligence platform provides campus-wide operational/business intelligence reporting, supports the university's data mining/predictive analytics initiative, and is a key driver in campus-wide efforts to improve and enhance data quality in support of strategy development and data-driven decision making. This position reports to the IT Associate CIO. The position also works with our Office of Institutional Planning and Effectiveness (OIPE) in support of campus-wide data mining efforts. The role requires the candidate to be both visionary and hands-on, with a focus on team efforts, technical curiosity, and creative problem-solving.

Bachelor's degree in computer science, business analytics or related field. Additionally, a minimum of three year's relevant work experience building, deploying, and supporting enterprise business intelligence capabilities.
Experience in information technology, or other business intelligence related functions/organizations in a higher education environment.
Desire to form and in-depth understanding of the functional environment and an interest in going beyond the obvious, delving into the source, the definition, philosophy, and foundational roots of a data element in order to create information.
Business process analysis skills and experience.
Knowledge of current best practices in BI visualization – tools, methods, etc.
Exposure to data warehouse technical architecture.
Knowledge of specific reporting tools, including Tableau, Microsoft Performance Point, or Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS).
Knowledge of data dictionary tools, including Data Cookbook.
Exposure to ERP systems, including Ellucian Banner.
Ability to manage projects and programs.
Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Business intelligence dashboard and report development.
Knowledge of logical and physical data modeling concepts, and data architecture concepts.
Exposure to metadata management tools and processes.
Exposure to data extract/transform/load (ETL) development concepts.
Broad knowledge of data definition, governance, classification, management, protection and use throughout the data life cycle.
Strategic and creative thinking with proven analytical and problem solving capability.
Experience presenting to and influencing across an organization.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills with demonstrated experience working with functional organizations, at both the operational and executive levels.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong willingness to learn new technologies and lead change.
