Department: UNIVERSITY EXTENSION - 027025 Department Description: Within UC Davis, the Division of Continuing and Professional Education (CPE) is a $40M self-supporting academic unit reporting to the Provost. The CPE team includes 210 academic and professional staff who collectively serve 60,000 learners from all 50 states and more than 100 countries each year. Operating as a totally self-supporting enterprise, CPE requires generation of revenue and a positive net margin to support operational needs and ensure adequate reserves for investment and business continuity. The division is funded by a variety of complex sources, including: contracts and grants (federal, state, local, and private), self-supporting activities (open enrollment, self-supporting degree programs and other activities), gifts and endowments, and other campus funds. The division negotiates/maintains a complex array of financial partnerships with faculty, schools, colleges and external entities to share revenues and margin. The division operates in a complex and dynamic market space that requires continual adaptation to market forces.

Job Summary: The Assistant Dean/Chief Operating Officer is a senior advisor to the Dean and senior business executive for the division. With the Dean and Associate Deans, leads short- and long-term strategic planning and operations with particular focus on driving growth for an organization with approximately 200 FTE and USD $40M budget. Manages all internal business operations including finance, IT, real estate/facilities, market research and business intelligence. Develops/consults on new business and funding models, evaluates financial viability of major divisional initiatives, and leads selected business growth initiatives. Oversees CPE budget planning and forecasting, with dual accountability for the quality of budgetary data and forecasts developed in consultation with academic chairs and directors. Leads technology strategic planning and implements business-transformative systems. Leads business intelligence unit providing data and insights to program planners, and oversees market research to assess viability of new self-supporting programs including degrees. Co-develops/co-leads new campus-serving market research and business consulting function to assess, model and recommend new self-supporting online graduate degrees. Responsible for understanding campus financial and technology issues, responding to UC and campus requests for information, and representing the division on Assistant Dean's Council. Leads multiple units and teams, providing visionary leadership along with effective coaching and performance management.

Minimum Qualifications: -Master's Degree in Business, Finance or related field and/or equivalent experience. -10 or more years of progressive leadership experience, including experience in a senor finance/business operations position. -Financial/business leadership experience in a self-supporting/revenue generation context. -Skill in financial modeling, forecasting and predictive analytics; excellent quantitative, analytical and abstract reasoning skills. -Knowledge of business strategies and business modeling approaches; demonstrated capacity to serve as a strategic business partner and consultant to product/program leaders; excellent negotiation skills. -Experience leading transformative operational change initiatives. -Experience with research methods for assessing the market and financial feasibility of self-supporting ventures. -Demonstrated ability to present complex information in a manner that produces action and results. -Knowledge of technologies and systems, and business analysis skills to define user requirements and advise on systems development. -Knowledge of fund accounting and governmental laws and regulations as they relate to Extramural funds. -Excellent communication, interpersonal and team building skills; experience with communication at all organization levels from strategic leadership to support functions. -Excellent planning and organizational skills to move an agenda from concept to realty and drive results and organizational improvement through performance outcomes. -Evidence of entrepreneurial and innovative thinking. -Exceptional creativity and problem-solving skills. -Prior experience supervising and managing personnel, and evidence of strong people leadership skills. -Customer service skills and experience in developing appropriate, creative solutions to customer needs/problems. -Computer proficiency in using word-processing, e-mail, web browsing tools and advanced skills in the use of spreadsheet software such as MS Excel to query large databases and massage data.
Preferred Qualifications: -Experience in university-based continuing and professional education. -Experience with public sector budgeting and accounting methods. -Experience leading an IT unit.
