As a member of the External Relations (ER) Information Technology team, the Associate Director focuses on developing insights and understanding of business performance based on data and provides strategic data analysis for leadership. Additionally, s/he/they collaborates with the HBS Information Technology database group on the design and maintenance of the data infrastructure that collectively supports operations and increases the effectiveness and efficiency of fundraising, prospect management, communications, and alumni engagement activities. S/he is responsible for the full systems life cycle management of data that supports ER's core business processes, operational reporting, and business analytics. S/he/they collaborates with internal ER departments to optimize business processes through implementing data solutions, driving business intelligence, and support of analytics. S/he/they also contributes to projects supporting alumni engagement, data integrity, and maintenance of the technology infrastructure (alumni website, applications, training, and policies). This role ensures the delivery, quality, reliability, stability and completeness of all data-related programs while also meeting the needs of the business.
Specific responsibilities include:
Understands business requirements for data and information to support business strategy and objectives. Identifies opportunities to use data to drive enhanced business decision-making and promote a data-driven culture.
Reviews and analyzes the effectiveness and efficiency of existing data source systems and develops strategies for improving or further leveraging these systems.
Collaborates in the planning, development, and deployment of new data solutions, enhancements to existing data solutions and dashboards.
Project Manager: takes personal responsibility for achieving results; reviews and evaluates progress against agreed targets and timelines
Work closely with technical architects, data and software engineers to ensure optimal application and data warehouse design to support reporting requirements.
Demonstrates forward thinking and plans ahead for potential roadblocks; comprehends bigger picture of the business strategy.
Develops, implements and adheres to IT standards and processes and promotes that knowledge across the team in order to develop and support data solutions that align with executive leadership goals and objectives.
Participates in strategic planning activities for the information data system landscape and assists with proposals for future-state architectures, strategies and roadmaps for big data and related applications.
Adheres to relevant regulatory requirements, including data management policies from HBS and Harvard University, as appropriate.
Participate in cross-departmental projects on topics such as data sharing, learning and training.
Participates in design sessions in prototyping new data solutions. Develops and adapts supporting tools to meet the needs of a frequently evolving ER.
Functions as an advisor and business analyst for senior leadership initiatives.
Serves as technical Subject Matter Expert in multiple business subjects such as fundraising and revenue forecasting.
Collaborates with the BI report production team to support development efforts on self-service analysis and reporting tools.

BA/BS required with minimum 7+ years experience with at least 3 years in an analyst role.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills and ability to synthesize high volumes of data and write concisely. Ability to work well with diverse groups, and must have strong reading, writing, analytical, and problem solving skills. Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and writing skills with careful attention to detail. Demonstrated initiative and ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Intermediate to advanced proficiency with SQL, Business Objects, Tableau, SPSS, or other data analysis software; strong knowledge of databases, research software, and techniques.
Strong experience leading complex projects with multiple stakeholders.
Must understand the distinction between public and private information and scrupulous attention to matters of discretion and confidentiality.
Successful candidates must be proficient in the use of large data sets and a relational database.
Fluency or proven ability to learn various computer software related to data mapping, data mining, and statistical software tools.
Strong analytical and problem solving skills and ability to locate and interpret biographic, philanthropic, and financial data from a variety of sources.
Ability to work well under pressure, handle several projects simultaneously, and reprioritize as needed as well as strong experience with computers, online databases, and Internet searching.
Strong computer skills and the ability to become comfortable quickly with the University's alumni and development databases.
