The East Carolina University Idea 2 Impact (I2I) Scholars Program has the goal of translating early stage innovations into impact through research, entrepreneurship and commercialization. The program focuses on providing a hands-on learning experience for doctoral trained research scientists in aspects of opportunity assessment, intellectual property strategy, business intelligence, market analysis, negotiation tactics and agreement review. This postdoctoral training position is open to individuals who are interested in advancing their knowledge of, and experience in, invention and innovation processes, technology transfer, entrepreneurism, and have a willingness to use these skills to improve economic prosperity in rural communities. Postdoctoral Scholars will perform the following activities for the I2I Scholar Program: Experiential Activities (Approximately 80% of the postdoctoral scholar's time)
Learning policies, procedures and regulations concerning technology transfer practices and intellectual property protection.
Scouting and assessing innovations for marketability and intellectual property protection.
Providing assessment reports to innovators and office staff.
Developing business strategies to advance novel research discoveries.
Conducting customer interviews to confirm market need.
Identifying consultants, contract research organizations and/or third parties that can assist in translating innovations.
Providing commercialization grant identification and support for faculty innovators
Supporting the ECU Patent Committee.
Understanding the link between research, innovation and rural Eastern North Carolina.
Serving as an advocate for innovation, entrepreneurship and commercialization.
Networking with internal and external partners including the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM), ECU's Small Business and Technology Development Center (SBTDC) and the ECU Miller School of Entrepreneurship. Instructional Activities (Approximately 10% of the postdoctoral scholar's time)
Giving lectures/seminars to undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, faculty, staff and friends of ECU regarding innovation, intellectual property and commercialization.
Supporting the I-Corps@ECU program. Duties include preparing advertising materials, developing course materials, operations management and outcome assessment. I-Corps@ECU aims to prepare and support innovators/inventors in the process of validating the potential for new products, services and technologies while launching new companies using proven methods in lean launch, customer discovery and business model innovation. Data Management Activities (Approximately 10% of the postdoctoral scholar's time)
Entering and tracking invention disclosures and agreements.
Analyzing and preparing reports regarding I-Corps registration and participation.
Candidates who show a mastery of the above activities will be given the opportunity to learn about licensing, materials transfer agreement, confidential disclosure agreements and negotiation tactics. Candidates may also be asked to serve as the project lead/manager for special programs. Special programs may include software implementation and oversight, conferences, events, student mentoring and/or other projects supported by the Office of Licensing and Commercialization.
Postdoctoral Scholars are expected to demonstrate compliance with established guidelines and regulatory standards for research including biosafety, responsible conduct of research and human subjects training.
