Alumni Affairs and Development (AAD) is committed to enhancing the lives of Cornell alumni and future alumni through lifelong partnership in commitment to the university's founding principle of "any person ... any study." AAD fosters vibrant, lifelong alumni engagement of Cornell University's 250,000 + alumni, through a variety of programs. Reporting to the Senior Director of Engagement Initiatives, Volunteer Programs and College and Unit Partnerships, the Director, Volunteer Operations will partner with senior administrative and college/unit leaders to provide expertise and leadership in the development, and implementation of a volunteer operations plan which (where appropriate) maximizes the opportunity to grow lifelong alumni engagement opportunities, with the goal to strengthen & grow overall alumni engagement and alumni giving participation. The Director will provide implementation, oversight, and refinement of the volunteer management cycle including-
~Volunteer recruitment; volunteer nominations and membership processes; development, and evaluation; in-person and virtual volunteer group interactions; volunteer pipeline management, off-boarding, succession planning; volunteer appreciation and recognition; volunteer data analysis and metrics; and volunteer communications for Cornell's entire alumni volunteer population.
The Director provides subject matter expertise and leadership for the implementation, oversight, and refinement of Cornell's volunteer management systems and processes including CUVolunteer and other technologies. The Director is the lead project manager for the Alumni Trustee Election held every year. The Director will also serve as the staff liaison for the volunteer nomination and membership committees for the Alumni Affairs top volunteer organizations (AA10) and support other volunteer committees and communities as needed.
The Director will support the Engagement Initiatives, Volunteer Programs and College and Unit Partnerships team in executing key volunteer initiatives and events including - Trustee Council Annual Meeting (TCAM), Frank H.T. Rhodes Exemplary Alumni Service Awards (FHTR), Cornell Alumni Leadership Conference (CALC), President's Council of Cornell Women's (PCCW) annual symposium, etc.
Additionally, the Director will oversee 1-2 team members.
The Director develops and maintains strong relationships with alumni leaders, high-level volunteers, university donors, donor prospects and key stakeholders. This position also works collaboratively with AAD colleagues, specifically with the university's Colleges and Units, Digital, Communications and Marketing, Regional Programs, International Alumni Programs, Class, Student and Young Alumni Programs, Diversity Alumni Programs, Business Intelligence, Administration, Principal and Major Gifts and Annual Giving Programs, and other areas. The ability to manage groups of high-level volunteers, manage complicated processes involving myriad stakeholders effectively and efficiently, and communicate outcomes in a timely manner are key attributes of success for this position. Evening, weekend work and travel is required.
Bachelor's Degree or the equivalent, with 5-7 years of experience, working in a large, complex, team-based environment that involves working with a mixture of internal and external constituents on a regular basis.
Demonstrated ability to create and implement long-term plans and annual goals and objectives.
Must have demonstrated the ability to effectively lead, support, build and maintain relationships with high-level volunteers, volunteer committees, and leadership boards.
Understanding of fundraising, specifically identification, cultivation, and stewardship.
Must be able to work both independently and in collaboration with internal and external constituents.
Ability to function effectively in a large, de-centralized university environment and build solid relationships with several departments throughout the university.
Able to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
Excellent interpersonal skills. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to effectively deliver a group presentation.
Must be organized, detail-oriented, able to work with and around extremely sensitive and confidential information.
Must be able to exercise judgment and discretion and make decisions that may impact the organization and its constituents.
Experience with managing team members and strong supervisory skills.
Must be able to work with desktop applications, databases, networked informational systems and the internet.
Experience developing plans for volunteer management and annual fundraising.
Prior work in higher education administration and/or alumni affairs.
Experience in overseeing volunteer initiatives.
Proven ability to utilize metrics for measuring impact.
