The Senior Business Intelligence Analyst is an integral member of the Office of Assessment and Decision Support (OADS), providing leadership to co-workers and interacting with colleagues across the University on behalf of OADS and the Provost's Office. Specifically, the incumbent serves as a key member of the decision support team within OADS. Exploiting business intelligence practices and technologies, s/he helps University executives, academics and administrators obtain the information they need to predict outcomes and support decisions and initiatives. The incumbent is expected to translate users' needs into clear requirements and design delivery systems to meet them. This analyst researches and utilizes technologies such as data mining, visualization, and modeling where necessary, creating and delivering information products to support decision makers. Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Institutional Research, the Senior Business Intelligence Analyst has additional duties that include but are not limited to:
Develops front-end information products using a variety of analytical tools (such as Cognos, SPSS, and Tableau).
Creates and publishes reports, analyses to meet needs at all levels, and prototypes and builds executive dashboards to track key metrics, developing multidimensional cubes to enable aggregate-level analysis.
Presents complex data using data visualization tools.
Leverages data mining technology to reveal unseen patterns and relationships.
Builds and implements statistical models to support forecasting and predictive analytics, assisting others in using analytical tools and navigating the reporting and analytical repositories.
Creates the back-end repositories and processes needed to make data accessible.
Builds the dimensional and multi-dimensional structures that store and optimize data for analysis and reporting.
Develops the extraction, transformation and load (ETL) logic required to integrate data and populate these structures.
Coordinates testing to ensure the accuracy and accessibility of integrated data.
Serves as a contributing member of the project team implementing the proposed enterprise data warehouse.
Business Needs and Designs Solutions
Analyzes information needs and requests to identify new data acquisition and integration requirements.
Designs and models systems to collect, store and deliver data, assessing data presentation needs and designs products (reports, analyses, dashboards) to meet them.
Utilizes and proposes new analytical tools and technologies (data mining, data visualization, statistical modeling) where appropriate.
Works collaboratively with directors, team leaders and peers in OADS to engage in projects that will be, in many cases, strategic and capacity building.
Consultation with University Decision Makers
Consults with University executives, academics and administrators upon request or as directed.
Engages decision makers to understand their business demands and information needs.
Articulates and documents these information needs.
Collaborates with OADS staff to establish the relative priority of these requests.
Emerging Technologies and Industry Best Practices
Actively follows industry trends in technology and higher education through periodicals, online forums and conferences.
Researches new analytical tools and emerging technologies - including data analysis, data visualization, data mining, and modeling tools.
Seeks training in specific tools and technologies as needed, attending relevant annual conferences (as funding permits), such as the Higher Education Data Warehouse (HEDW) and The Data Warehousing Institute (TDWI) conferences.
Requirements and Qualifications:
Five years or more experience as an analyst in a decision support role, preferably in an education-related field
Expertise with business intelligence tools (Blackboard Analytics, Cognos, Business Objects)
Proficient using statistical packages (SPSS, SAS, Stata)
Proficient using SQL in relational databases (Oracle, SQL Server)
Experience using data transformation tools (Informatica, DataStage)
Knowledgeable in data warehousing principles and dimensional modeling techniques
Familiarity with ERP reporting solutions, e.g. Banner ODS, PeopleSoft EPM
Excellent consulting, communication and problem-solving skills
Strong needs analysis, data modeling and systems design skills
Proven rapid prototyping and report development expertise
Strong data analysis, data mining and statistical modeling skills
Fundamental programming and data manipulation skills
Excellent organizational and time-management skills
Understanding of higher education structure and dynamics
