The Data Solutions Analyst is part of the Office for Planning and Institutional Effectiveness (PIE) at Vanderbilt University and is a key contributor, utilizing institutionally designated approaches and technologies to ensure successful delivery of high-quality and relevant data solutions to meet consumer needs. Reporting directly to the Associate Director, the position is responsible for performing moderately complex project and analytical work in a wide range of business intelligence activities that ensure the uniformity, accuracy, and semantic consistency of enterprise data through the application of effective data management, security, stewardship, and governance processes.
The Data Solutions Analyst works in partnership with other team members as well as the broader PIE Team. They are proficient in utilizing Business Intelligence (BI) tools and knowledgeable of university data; performing assigned activities such as defining data requirements, designing data models, building dashboards, writing BI reports, and performing ad-hoc analysis to assist consumers in achieving operational and strategic goals. The position also partners closely with information technology to build out our data warehouse and create metadata reporting solutions. The position may also employ predictive modeling and analytics techniques to aid decision making in areas of strategic interest to the university administration.
The Office for Planning and Institutional Effectiveness (PIE) partners with leaders in Academic Affairs and beyond to support decision-making, planning, and action based on high-quality and relevant data, information, and analysis. The Office comprises four teams: Partnering; Institutional Research and Analysis; Assessment; and Data Governance and Solutions.
The Data Solutions Analyst is part of the Data Governance and Solutions team. Data Governance and Solutions is a key driver in efforts to improve and enhance data quality and analytics in support of data-driven decisions that affect students, both current and future.
Duties and Responsibilities
Business Intelligence Tools:
Uses BI tools such as Oracle Business Intelligence, Tableau, SQL Developer, and SQL Server (both T-SQL query writing and ETL development in SSIS) to provide insightful BI reports, dashboards, data sets, and ad-hoc analysis to meet consumer data needs.
Develop new analytics solutions; support and maintain existing solutions.
Participate in testing and evaluating new BI analysis and reporting solutions, tool upgrades, enhancements and change requests.
Develop and maintain data load packages and database tables for use in reporting.
Identify existing solutions or design new solutions that satisfy information requests.
Use standardized practices in developing data solutions.
Fulfill Report Requests:
Successfully delivers reporting solutions through detailed analyses of reporting needs.
Participate in requirements gathering and analysis, technical design, building, testing, and documentation of data solutions.
Develop and adhere to official definitions and PIE standards in reporting.
Present information in a clear, concise and understandable format.
Contribute to the compliance of Federal reporting (IPEDS) and external agency reporting (e.g. College Board, U.S. News and World Report).
Assist with updating publicly available data such as the VU Factbook and Common Data Set annually.
Designs logical data models of moderate complexity. Identifies redundant data objects and data items that can be re-used across applications. Identifies gaps in data or object models, recommends appropriate changes, and creates transformation requirements.
Develop an in-depth understanding of the functional data environment.
Thinks beyond the obvious when analyzing data. Use reports and analyses to identify potentially problematic data and recommend possible solutions.
Collaborate with consumers to improve data quality and consistency.
Use knowledge of data systems to provide highly accurate and timely data solutions.
Use analytic techniques to develop test cases for report, analysis, and data warehouse changes.
Maintain data confidentiality and observe all FERPA regulations.
Profile of an Ideal Candidate
Bachelor's degree in computer science, business analytics, or related experience is necessary.
Data visualization and reporting tools experience (Oracle BI, Tableau or similar) is preferred.
Relational database and SQL skills (i.e. Oracle and SQL Server) is necessary.
Ability to manipulate, transform, or merge datasets using tools such as Excel, R, or python is preferred.
Experience in information technology or other business intelligence related functions is preferred.
Exposure to data extract/transform/load (ETL) development concepts using SSIS or other ETL tools is preferred.
Experience working with large relational databases is preferred.
Higher education experience is preferred.
