UW Medicine’s IT Services department has an outstanding opportunity for an BI Business Analyst 2! This position is currently 100% remote due to COVID-19. When restrictions are lifted and staff can return to the workplace, there is a high likelihood of partial ongoing remote work in the future.
UW Medicine’s Information Technology Services (ITS) department is a shared services organization that supports all of UW Medicine. UW Medicine is comprised of Harborview Medical Center (HMC), UW Medical Center-Montlake Campus (UWMC-Montlake), UW Medical Center-Northwest Campus (UWMC-NW), Valley Medical Center (VMC), UW Neighborhood Clinics (UWNC), UW Physicians (UWP), UW School of Medicine (SOM) and Airlift Northwest (ALNW). In addition, UW Medicine shares in the ownership and governance of Children’s University Medical Group and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (a partnership between UW Medicine, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research and Seattle Children’s). ITS is responsible for the ongoing support and maintenance of the infrastructure and applications which support all of these institutions, along with the implementation of new services and applications that are used to support and further the UW Medicine mission.
In collaboration with UW Medicine IT Services (‘ITS’) and under the general guidance of the Assistant Director, Analytics Consulting, the primary focuses of the Business Intelligence (BI) Business Analyst 2 (‘BI Analyst 2’) are
working with internal customers to define and prioritize business requirements;
partnering with development, application, and other Analyst teams to design and implement analytics solutions; and
providing an overall excellent customer experience.
While all members of the Analytics Consulting group are expected to develop proficiency across all domains we support, areas of responsibility for this role include, but are not limited to:
access management process oversight and implementation for Analytics solutions;
service request (ticket) management and triage;
identifying and implementing internal process improvement within Analytics; and
complex business requirements gathering and management.
As a member of the Analytics Consulting group the BI Analyst 2 directly supports the triage of incoming customer requests with other team members; works broadly across the Analytics Consulting group to ensure effective work prioritization; and ensures requests are assigned to the best possible resource(s). The BI Analyst 2 engages with other team members to drive process improvement within the Analytics Consulting group and throughout the department as a whole. The incumbent stays up-to-date on all department solutions and services and frequently demonstrates and educates customers on existing and new tools.
This position is expected to leverage enterprise business intelligence tools to answer questions about data, produce meaningful analyses, and independently create reports, dashboards, and other data visualizations when needed. Overall, data analytics is a strategic function within UW Medicine with a large set of growing demands. The ability to deliver improved analytics, faster, and at a lower cost is essential to both tactical and strategic success of UW Medicine overall. This role provides crucial support to UW Medicine and its partners for all of the major initiatives that require operational reporting, visualization or dashboards to deliver information to all levels of the organization and affect change. The analytics solutions developed by this role are used to support clinical, operational, and financial reporting and analysis and are key to the success of the organization as a whole. Adhering to best practices and standards helps support enterprise-wide goals and ensures data standardization across the enterprise.
Requirements Gathering and Verification (60%)
Collaborates with UW Medicine partners and BI Report Developers facilitating business requirements analysis via the methodical investigation, analysis, review, and documentation of all or part of a business in terms of business functions and data needs.
Manages the requirements development process through the elicitation, analysis, specification, and verification of multiple levels of requirements (i.e., business, stakeholder, and/or solution).
Supports the ongoing management of business requirements.
Creates viable and consumable specifications, including acceptance criteria, in preparation for the sign-off, construction, and testing of reporting solutions.
Project Management and Process Improvement (20%)
Utilizes industry best practices for gathering and documenting end users’ reporting requirements.
Coordinates with Data Architects, SQL administrators, BI administrators and others to understand and document technical requirements, capabilities, and limitations.
Collaborates with Data Architects, SQL Administrators, BI administrators and others to design appropriate BI solutions based on business and technical requirements.
Translates high level business requirements into detailed specifications and work plans.
Develops and executes work planning related to report development tasks including effort and completion date estimates.
Performs to schedule and completes all tasks in the agreed upon timelines.
Works independently on assigned tasks with minimal assistance.
Develops and maintains supporting documentation (i.e., business requirements documents, design documents, report inventory, etc.).
Leads interactions with customers to communicate status, resolve issues, and obtain sign-offs (i.e., design complete, testing complete, and/or ready for promotion).
Performs efficient and complete hand-offs to Developers.
Reports work status and issues to the Manager of the Analytics Reporting team in a timely manner.
Manages competing stakeholder priorities to ensure the highest value is being delivered to customers.
Quality Assurance, Communication, and Release Management (15%)
Writes, revises, and verifies test procedures to measure report quality.
Executes and manages functional and regression tests on reporting solutions.
Works with the team to determine and implement agreed upon testing principles and practices.
Leads report releases, as required.
Participate in all aspects of improving the team, including education/training of other team members and contributing to process/communication improvement initiatives.
Work with manager to set professional goals for career development.
Act as back-up for other team members and functions, as needed.
Bachelor's degree in Business or Health Administration, Computer Science, Information Systems, Public Health or related field or equivalent combination of education/experience.
3+ years’ experience must include the following:
3+ years recent healthcare or IT experience.
3+ years’ experience performing progressively more complex and responsible Business Analysis and Project Management tasks. This includes the ability to lead a project with a duration longer than 3-months, and a level of effort estimate <500 hours.
3+ years’ experience working through the complete report development lifecycle.
3+ years' experience with data analytics.
1+ years providing various systems application maintenance/support, configuration and implementation.
Complete and demonstrable understanding of BI reporting best practices.
Knowledge and experience with practices to fully understand business needs and successfully translate business needs into appropriate documentation for systems implementation.
In-depth knowledge of testing methodologies, QA practices, strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills.
Demonstrated experience in writing requirements and test specifications. including revising standard templates and processes for optimization.
Demonstrates understanding of basic database structures, data definitions, and data relationships.
Demonstrates competency in multiple applications systems.
Familiar with multiple operating systems and hardware platforms, and their integration into various applications and equipment.
Familiar with HL7, ANSI, and/or other system standards.
Familiar with HTML.
Knowledge of web-based authoring tools for training applications.
Understands migration methodology and data exchanges, including APIs.
Familiarity with the software development lifecycle.
Proficiency with standard administrative office applications: Microsoft Windows platform, Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Word), etc.
Previous experience in and knowledge of academic healthcare systems and/or operational environments.
Advanced degree (e.g., Master’s, PhD, etc.)
Currently holds one current Epic certification, preferably an Epic Data Model certification (or equivalent with other major systems/processes) OR has had Epic proficiency (or equivalent) for 3+ years in relevant functional/business area.
3+ years’ experience with healthcare data analytics. Applied practical knowledge of healthcare data and terminology.
Knowledge of the healthcare regulatory environment and fluent in computer and healthcare related concepts and vernacular, including those specific to UW.
Knowledge of clinical healthcare concepts and workflows.
Knowledge of project management concepts. Experience with formal project management methods desirable.
5+ years of current/recent experience with BI tools, preferably BusinessObjects or Tableau.
5+ years of experience working through the complete report development lifecycle.
3+ years’ experience with Epic reporting.
Strong understanding of data warehousing concepts.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
This is an Information Technology deadline-driven work environment.
The individual in this position is expected to work normal daytime hours. The work may be performed in either an office environment or by telecommuting with manager approval, during normal business hours; however, significant off-hours and weekends may be needed to resolve problems and respond to emergencies. This individual is expected to be available for emergencies (business continuity/disaster recovery efforts) on a 24x7 basis as needed.
Must have the ability to meet in person as directed by manager.
Because of the physically separated sites for UW Medicine, this position requires the ability to travel to alternative work locations as needed.
Must coordinate projects without direct supervisory authority.
Must work within the constraints of multiple technical environments.
